's home town in louisiana. >> they've managed to create a ta trkt arta -- patina of a show that's around a country format. >> reporter: not only are the robertsons real people, but they still live in their home time. one offers visitors to duck into the city of monroe and follow the beards. now for the beards. the unkempt facial hair is all its own. i even felt a little out of place when i met them last year. there is a solution for that. the duck dynasty beard booth. problem solved. "duck dynasty" outstanding ratings are a threat and an example of how tv ratings are being dumbed down to the lowest common denominator. >> what we're seeing is there are all kinds of viewers watching some of these shows for different reasons. some watch them because they relate to the characters, and some people watch it to feel superior to the characters. the truth is, for a & e's purposes, it doesn't matter why people watch as long as they keep doing it. >> reporter: fans, however, argue it's not the beards or the camouflage that makes it attractive to the audience, it's the clampitt style clean humor and

of louisiana. here are some of the watches out there. we have the saturated ground anywhere in green. we'll see a lot of these watches in effect until tomorrow. and we're still following the tropics. we have an area of low pressure right in the gulf coast -- i should say the gulf of mexico. you can see all the convection and thunderstorms to the northeast of that. well, it's not very well organized, but it still has a 40% chance of development. we'll continue to follow that and, of course, as we follow over the west, we are following the fires burning across parts of idaho, and it looks like we have red flag warnings in place today. that means wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour. weather is certainly not cooperating across that region, but in the northeast it's real nice out there, guys. temperatures running 10 to 15 degrees below average and lots of sunshine in place. back over to you two. >> jennifer, thank you very much. >>> the search for a missing teen growing desperate today in virginia. 17-year-old alexis murphy has been missing for two weeks. investigators have no idea where she is or if

duck dynasty. the series follows a wildly successful family-run company in louisiana that manufactures duck calls. on wednesday, the show's fourth season premier shattered cable tv records for reality shows 11.8 million people tuned in. half of those in the critical 18 to 49 demographic. the show also lights up social media and it has its own hugely popular product line. what explains the success? what's the allure of watching a bunch of long-haired rednecks sitting around teasing each other talking about their business, relationships and family lives? there is no nudity. pretty much no foul language. and no celebrity drop-byes. first, this is my theory. the duck dynasty characters are genuinely funny, but it's not always the obvious slapstick stuff. the dialogue can be really ironic, too. the robertson family comes across as unrehearsed, no nonsense, and warm. yet, there is another explanation for this mega hit. the show's focus on family, country and faith. each episode, in fact, ends with a prayer. >> let's pray. father, we thank you for this night and we thank you for the blessing

of them. he was from louisiana. he worked in the railroads for a while as a porter. when i met him, he was -- he had a water pump here and a little pecan tree, and he was cutting down the pecan tree to burn fire to keep himself warm. he was five-foot-five, sleeping on a little iron crate. the crate was too small for him, so he had a wooden beekeeper's box for his head. there were -- i'll looking inside, and there were veinna sausage cans, empty ones, that had had put in the corners to keep the place from falling. literally, chickens have a better roost than had did, and this is where he was living. he came, you know, we found him a half century later, and he was nervous, thought we were government workers here to maybe inspect the house, shut it down, whatever. i said, new york city we're -- i said, no, we're here to tell his story. we're standing in the old lake basin. it was the biggest body of fresh water west of the mississippi, 800 square miles of lake right here in the middle of california, and these cotton grower from the south, chased out by the bull weevil came west, and they
